TVS DRAKEN 2014

When TVS launched the Apache in 2007, it became an instant hit, replacing the Suzuki Fiero and starting a huge fan base. TVS upgraded the Apache from 150 to 160 and also brought out the 180 but further progress was halted. Everyone was expecting more powerful versions of the Apache to come, including a 200 and a 250. That did not happen and every Auto Expo has been disappointing for RTR fans as the company never showcased anything worth a second glance. At the 2014 Auto Expo, things were different, taking centre stage was the TVS Draken Concept.

The TVS Draken Concept (codenamed X21) points to the future direction of the Apache. TVS Motor’s press release clearly states “TVS Draken-X21 is also an indicator of what to expect from the next generation Apache RTRs in terms of form and emotion.” We all know about TVS’ tie-up with the big daddy of 2-wheelers, BMW Motorrad and the first product will be launched in 2015, likely to be a 500cc bike. TVS can’t rely solely on BMW and the Draken Concept is proof that the Hosur based manufacturer is working hard to re-kindle romance with Apache fans.

The TVS Apache 250 is likely to be launched in the next 18 months and will draw heavy inspiration from the Draken. It will be a naked bike, weighing less thanks to the use of an aluminium trellis frame. This chassis is sure to give the Apache RTR 250 stellar dynamics. The 250cc, single-cylinder, 4-valve liquid-cooled engine showcased on the Draken outputs an unbelievable 38.50 PS of power and 23 Nm of torque, expect the same to be tamed on the Apache 250 with around 30 horses on tap.

TVS will continue to target the urban youth with the Apache 250 and the design will evolve from the current Apache. The Draken gets some interesting bits like a full LED headlamp with DRLs, active matrix digital console, bar end mirrors, ABS, petal discs, 120 mm front tyre, 160 mm rear tyre, offset monoshock, reverse free flow exhaust, race ergonomics, etc. Expect some of these features to make it to the Apache 250, which is likely to be priced under Rs. 1.50 lakhs.
